Adapted Books For Preschool Special Education

Throughout the years of teaching preschool special education, I have been in search of the perfect, repetitive books to go with the themes that I teach.  It has been a long search and I quickly found out that none of the books on the market worked well with my students.  They needed simple language, bold pictures with limited number of items on a page, repetitive language, interactive pieces to help keep them engaged and information that went along with the themes that I was teaching in the classroom.  I started making my own adapted books and over the years added different activities to these books that I found very useful for my students.  I love having a bunch of activities that go along with a story.  I typically read a story for a full week or more in my classroom.  I may change some of the activities, but keep the story and vocabulary words consistent so that they are able to really learn the information.  This adapted book is for my transportation theme and has pictures that you have the students match while you read the story to make it interactive.  You can also use these pictures to make a matching game after you read the story with your students to reinforce the vocabulary words.

I also make activities to go along with the stories, so that they can practice answering WH questions or sort pictures into categories.

I have also discovered boom cards and since I teach remotely have made my adapted books into boom cards so that I can make them interactive while I read them online to my students.

Here is a FREEBIE adapted book on Farm Animals & activities to go along with the story!  Enjoy!                                                           ~Tracy
