And the planning begins… I am excited to begin my new role as a resource teacher in our preschool building. I will serve the children with IEPs within our at-risk program. Prior to this I was teaching self-contained preschool for 20 years so this is a big change for me, but one I am very excited about. Many of the students I will be working with need significant adaptations compared to the peers in their classroom. My activities vary on ability levels and can be adapted easily. I wanted to find some new exciting back to school activities to get my kids moving. I made back to school scavenger hunts that focus on school supplies, areas of the classroom, and different areas around the school. I adapted the scavenger hunts into different levels, so all the kids I work with could participate. My plan will be to introduce the vocabulary words first during small or large group. Then model using the scavenger hunt clipboard and marker by walking around with the children first. Next break the kids into pairs so they can work together to help one another, but allowing each student their own scavenger hunt clipboard. I will start with the school supplies as it is typically housed in the same area of the classroom. Then I will move into the centers or different areas of the room scavenger hunt. When the students are doing well with those two activities, we will venture out into the school to find the different areas around the school. This is a great way to get the kids familiar with their new school, familiarize them with new vocabulary words they will be hearing, and also reinforcing the routines and rules of school. Below are my scavenger hunt examples. You can make your own to fit your classroom and school or check out my resources. Back To School Scavenger Hunt
