File Folder Games For Special Education

File folder games are a great resource for special education classrooms, offering interactive and engaging ways to practice academic skills. They are portable, easy to organize, and can be tailored to individual learning needs. Below are some file folder game ideas that can be helpful in a preschool setting, with a seasonal theme to make learning both fun and seasonal.

Skills to Reinforce Using File Folder Games:

  1. Reinforce targeted vocabulary words, colors, shapes, numbers, & letters
  2. Reinforce matching skills
  3. Increase independence during work time
  4. Adapt the number of items students need to find based on their individual needs

How To Use File Folder Games for your special education class:

  1. You can use these basic file folders during independent work time to reinforce basic academic skills. Independent work time can be a time when your students work alone at a desk or table to complete tasks independently. Once your student has mastered the file folder task, then you can add it to their work time activities.
  2. You can make file folder games more interactive with a partner and also work on turn taking skills. Use a mystery bag and put all the pieces in. Have students take turns pulling the cards out and matching.
  3. You can make file folder games more fun by hiding the pictures in a small sensory bin and have students take turns searching for the pictures and matching it to the file folder to make it more engaging.

Special Interest File Folders:

Use these favorite topics to motivate your students to help reinforce academic skills. If your student is particularly interested in vehicles or animals, use these pictures to create file folder games with different academic skills attached, such as colors, shape, numbers, and letters. You can also use special tv characters your students like. For example, I have used paw patrol, bluey, and spiderman to help motivate my students!
