Behavior help: Calm Down Strategies for Your Preschool Special Education Students Calm Down In the Classroom?

Calm Down Area

Need help calming your pre-k students down?  Try this step-by-step calm down kit!

As an early childhood special education teacher, most of my day is spent keeping my students regulated and calm.  Many of the students I work with struggle with big emotions and do not have coping skills to calm themselves down.  I work with my students to teach them step-by-step ways to help calm them down.  We work on going to the calming corner, identifying their feelings using pictures, trying coping strategies such as breathing and counting, choosing an alternate activity, and returning to the class when they are calm.

This folder has helped my students visually go through each step to help them calm down.  I created a bin with alternate activities such as, drawing, fidgets, playdough, books, and small toys.  I also have options outside of the classroom for the children that are able to do that, such as go for a walk, go for a wagon ride, get a drink of water, or go to the motor room.  You can tailor your calm down kit to the needs and interests of your students.
