Distance Learning for Special Education Preschoolers

Distance Learning in the Early Childhood Special Education classroom is less than ideal!  The challenges that we face as special educators during this time are endless and very frustrating.  So let’s look at how we can do this as best we can… This past spring, I came up with a weekly schedule for my students and parents that I hope provided them with a consistent routine at home.

Sample Schedule:

Circle Time with Ms. J- (I provided a weekly circle time video for my students to watch daily)

Story Time with Ms. J-(I provided 5 video read alouds based on the the theme of the week)
Literacy/Math Activities(I provided literacy and math activities to go along with the theme and had students pick 1 activity of each if able)

Speech Time (My speech-pathologist would provide a speech video and activities for each week)

Art/Fine Motor Time-(My occupational therapist provided a video and art project to complete at home using materials around the house)
Play Time- (I provided a variety of play activities that children could play at home)

I included information regarding what “goals” the children should be working on during their home learning.

Goals for Your Child:

Remember the home environment is different from school.  These are goals in the classroom setting that we are working on in the areas of academics, functional skills, and social-emotional.  Do not expect that your child can do them already.  Do the best that you can to help your child and make learning fun.  Remember to give them lots of movement breaks!  If at any time you need help or have questions, please contact me.

  • Sit and attend to a story
  • Sit and follow the directions given by the teacher or parent
  • Follow directions to complete the activity with reminders
  • Identify vocabulary words, colors, shapes, numbers, and letters to the best of their ability
  • Transition to and from different activities with reminders

I would include a variety of read alouds,  vocabulary words, math skills, and more to go with the theme I was working on for the week.

Here is a sample of the zoo animal theme.
