Let’s Go To The Farm! Preschool Special Ed Farm Activities

This week we are learning about the farm in my self-contained preschool classroom.  This is one of my student’s favorite themes!  We can learn about the farm for weeks.  Here are some of the stories and activities we are learning this week.  We also love music and sing lots of farm songs.  I incorporate farm animal objects into everything I do, including while reading stories, listening to songs, and in our sensory bin.   Here is our interactive farm story that we read everyday.  The kids are getting good at matching the picture to the story.  Some of my students are not yet able to match pictures, so I show them the object of the farm animal while we are reading.

During our work time with the teacher, I made a small sensory bin filled with rice and added mini farm animals and a matching board.  Some of my students are able to find the animal and match it to the correct pictures, while other students just explore the rice and animals and I label the animals and sounds they make while we play.  This I purchased from Lakeshore Learning, but you could also make your own with farm animals objects and pictures.

Another fun game we do is called Barnyard Bingo.  For my students who are ready for turn taking, I use this for a simple turn taking game.  I use the kids photos to indicate whose turn it is and usually set it up so that each child gets the right colored bingo coin for their board.  For my students who are not ready for turn taking, we use it as a matching or put in task.  They love the funny sound it makes when you open the bottom to get the bingo coins.
